What happens when a tiny birthday bet lights a fuse you swore you’d never touch? We follow Eddie Newell, a seasoned Vegas dealer who knows the house edge by heart, as one casual keno win cracks his no-gambling rule and pulls him into a 33‑hour sprint through craps, slots, blackjack, and baccarat. The stakes snowball from tip money to five‑figure wagers, the pit bosses watch, the adrenaline surges, and the numbers climb past a million. Then variance flips the script, and the same mind that felt untouchable meets the cold math of the game.
We walk you through the real economy of 1970s casino work—minimum wage, pooled tips, graveyard culture—and how early wins weaponize psychology. Eddie’s hot streak becomes a case study in overconfidence, loss of time awareness, and the classic trap: a plan for losing with no plan for winning. As chips stack up, relationships strain; calls to “cash out now” collide with a brain riding dopamine spikes and pattern-seeking in pure randomness. When the edge reasserts itself, the slide is fast and punishing: desperate calls for the money he sensibly stashed, bigger bets to “get even,” and a brutal end that turns a windfall into a warning.
Along the way, we unpack practical guardrails you can use anywhere risk meets reward: pre-set profit targets, enforced cash-out rules, fatigue breaks, and clear lines between identity and outcome. This is a gripping, human story about luck’s bright promise and the house’s quiet patience—and a reminder that the hardest decision is often walking away while ahead. If this tale hits a nerve, share it with a friend who loves a hot streak, and subscribe for more true stories that expose how chance, choice, and pressure collide.

SPEAKER_01Well, hello, little creepies. It is I, the Master of Creep. Tonight's story is Lady Luck, not tonight. Say, do you ever play the lottery? Do you feel lucky? Let me tell you about Eddie Newell. Well he was a blackjack dealer and he worked at the Fort Queens in Las Vegas back in the mid-70s. Eddie had a lot of experience, over ten years as a dealer. He dealt blackjack, crabs, and roulette. Now many people may not know this, but most of these dealers made minimum wage, which at that time was about a dollar eighty five per hour. Certainly not enough to pay rent, food, and other bills. And you might be asking, why does this job pay so little? Well, it's because casino dealers also make tips. In fact, this is where the majority of their income comes from. And in Eddie's case, he usually made about forty dollars per day in tips. Now that was pretty good money back in 1975. So here's how it works. Players who play and win will often make bets for the dealers. So when the player wins, the dealer also wins. For example, if a player bets a$5 casino chip and wins for the dealer, then the dealer just received a$10 tip. And the dealers put their tips in a box in the gaming pit, and all the tips are combined and then divided out at the end of each shift. So let's assume that there are a hundred dealers on a particular shift, and the total tips added up to$3,850. Well, each dealer would receive their$1.85 per hour plus$38.50 in tips. Another interesting perk that many casinos give their dealers is a drink at the end of their shift. And this is why you might be seeing people at the bar at 7 o'clock in the morning drinking beer and wine. Well, these are probably dealers who have just finished their shifts. And to them it's not really 7 in the morning. It's more like 7 o'clock at night. Now these people will probably go home and go to sleep about 10 o'clock in the morning and wake up later on about 6 or 7 p.m. And then go back to work at about 11 p.m. for the graveyard shift. Now Eddie grew up in Las Vegas. Eddie's father passed away in 1972, and he was also a casino dealer, but he was known to gamble a lot. Usually he gambled all of his tips away every single night. Now this caused many problems and Eddie's parents divorced in 1969. Eddie's father is the person who taught Eddie how to deal cards and he helped him get his first casino job at the Golden Gate Casino in downtown Las Vegas. And at the time Eddie was only 21 years old, barely old enough to become a casino dealer. Eddie lived with his sister and rented a room in her house. Eddie, unlike his father, rarely ever gambled. A lot of pain was caused by his father's gambling habit when Eddie was growing up. And Eddie said, If you want to work for the casino, you are always on the winning side. And Eddie was very frugal with his money, since working for the casinos, he had saved about twelve thousand dollars, and he planned to marry his girlfriend Debbie and buy a home in Las Vegas. On one particular Thursday morning, July 27, 1978, why it was Eddie's birthday, and he had just finished the graveyard shift at the Four Queens Casino in downtown Las Vegas. The casino gave Eddie a free drink ticket, and he met several of his co-workers for a beer at the bar, and Eddie mentioned that it was his birthday. And one of his friends, Danny, who was also working at the Four Queens, said, Well, I had no idea it was your birthday. Let's walk over to the horseshoe and get something to eat. It'll be my treat. Danny's wife worked at the horseshoe and she was scheduled to get off at 8 AM. So Danny and Eddie walked over and waited for her to finish her shift, and the three of them went downstairs and had a big steak and egg breakfast. Now at the horseshoe you could get steak and eggs for two dollars at any time 24 hours a day. And during their breakfast, a kino girl walked by and Danny filled out a kino ticket and bet a dollar on an eight spot. And a few minutes later, Danny noticed that he got five out of eight numbers correct on the kino game and he won three dollars back. Danny said, Wow, look, I just got breakfast for free. Danny said, Okay, Lynn, that's Danny's wife. Now it's your turn. And when the Kino girl came by, Lynn bet two dollars on a six spot. And sure enough, she hit four out of six numbers and won twelve dollars. And Lynn laughed and said, I just want breakfast for the whole week. And Lynn said, Okay, Eddie, let's see if you can beat that. And Eddie said, Well, no, I don't gamble. And Danny said, Oh come on, man, it's your birthday. Live a little. Well, Eddie had just picked up his tips for the previous shift and he made forty six dollars. So he thought, oh well, why not? Eddie gave the Kino Girl a dollar for a quick pick four spot. Five minutes later the Kino game drew all four of his numbers. Eddie had just won ninety seven dollars. And Danny said, Well, happy birthday. This must be your lucky day. Well after breakfast, Danny and Lynn said goodbye and they left Eddie and he was going to walk out the front of the horseshoe casino, but he passed a craps table, and he thought, well maybe this is my lucky day. Maybe I should just play for a few minutes. But then he had a second thought. No, I have to be at work tomorrow. I need to get home and get to bed. And Eddie went back and forth and finally decided that he would play. I'll play for just ten minutes and then I'll leave. Now for all of you craps players out there, you know how that game runs. Sometimes it runs in lucky spurts. It seems like everything that you do wins. And other times it seems like every bet that you make loses. It's very unpredictable. But the fact is you can win a lot of money if you happen to be in the middle of a lucky streak. And this happened to be Eddie's lucky run at the craps table. He decided to use$20 of his newfound money. And he told himself that if he lost that$20 while he would quit and go home, he would still be$77 ahead on the Kino game. Well here's the problem. Eddie had a plan for losing, but he did not have a plan for winning. He never really considered what he would do if he won. And this is precisely what happened. Eddie turned his twenty dollars into a hundred dollars in just five minutes. And since he really didn't have a plan for winning, he just kept playing. He played and he played and he played and he won. Within about 30 minutes, he had$700 in casino chips in his rack. And it seemed like every bet that he made was a winner. He started thinking, why this must be how his father felt when he gambled. And now I understand this thinking. Eddie knew that his girlfriend must be wondering what happened to him. Why he should have been home more than an hour ago. So Eddie cashed in his$700 and chips, and he looked for a payphone, and he called his girlfriend Debbie to explain why he was so late. And he told her that he had met a couple of coworkers and because it was his birthday they treated him to breakfast. Now Eddie didn't say anything about gambling because he didn't want to tell Debbie that he was gambling because of his personal rule. Of course, Debbie knew all about his father and his gambling problems. So Debbie said, Well, okay, that's fine. So when are you gonna be here? And Eddie said, I'll be there in a few minutes. And to be fair, Eddie had every intention of leaving the casino. Just as he was getting to the front door of the casino to walk out, Eddie passed a slot machine. He reached down in his pockets, he noticed that he had a few quarters left over. And he thought, oh well, what's the harm? Let's try this just for the heck of it. And bam, his first three quarters went into the slot machine and hit a seven seven seven on the symbol and won two hundred and fifty dollars. Wait, wait, what? Eddie could not believe his luck. He thought this can't even be real. He had more than a thousand dollars in his pocket now, and he only started with his tip money. And his kino winnings and his crafts winnings are starting to add up and now he has the slot machine winnings. He went back to the payphone and he called Debbie again. And Debbie asked, Where are you? Eddie says, Well I'm still at the horseshoe. And Debbie said, Why? And Eddie finally spilled the truth and he explained that he started playing with some of his money and he won a kino and he won at craps and now he's won at a slot machine. And Debbie said, Holy cow, I thought I thought you didn't like gambling. And Eddie says, Well it's not like me to play, but I have over a thousand dollars now. I think I'll try maybe for another hour. Why don't you come down here so I can give you some of my winnings so that you can take 'em back with you and I can't possibly lose them. This made sense to Debbie, so she said, Okay, I'll be there in a few minutes. Well, it took her about thirty minutes, but when she finally walked in the door, she found Eddie at a blackjack table. And by the time she got up to him, Eddie was still winning, but this time he had more than three thousand dollars in front of him. And Debbie said, You need to cash out and come home. It's past eleven AM and you need to get to bed. You have to work tonight. Eddie says, Yes, you're right. Okay, take these chips and go cash them in, and I'll see you back at the house. And Debbie took two thousand five hundred and chips and cashed them in at the casino cage, and Eddie kept five hundred dollars and said, I should be home in about thirty minutes. Well, thirty minutes came and went, and there was no sign of Eddie. Eddie never made it out of the casino. He turned his last five hundred dollars of chips into five thousand dollars. He lost complete track of time. And then Eddie remembered talking to Debbie, and he knew, oh my gosh, I'm probably in trouble now. I'm supposed to be home. But he also knew that his girlfriend would probably be asleep by now because she also worked the graveyard shift at a casino. So he called his sister, and he explained what happened. He explained that he started gambling and winning, and he asked her, can you come down here and take some of my winnings so I can't lose them all? And she agreed, and she went to the casino and took four thousand dollars of Eddie's money back home. But Eddie still had a thousand dollars and chips, and he was still gambling. It was about two o'clock in the afternoon, and he started getting tired, but he pressed on and he kept winning. And at this point Eddie started believing that he could not possibly lose. He started making outrageous bets. He made one hundred dollar bets. He made two hundred and fifty dollar bets. He even started making five hundred dollar bets. And yes, he kept winning. By four thirty PM, Eddie was up twenty seven thousand dollars. And by six thirty PM Eddie was up to seventy two thousand dollars. By eight thirty PM, Eddie was up to one hundred and fifty four thousand dollars. And of course by then, Eddie's girlfriend, Debbie, woke up and she learned that Eddie never came home. Of course, she got mad and she went back to the casino and found Eddie. But by then he had more than two hundred thousand dollars. And she went from being mad to being extremely happy. Oh my god, we are rich. Eddie said, I know, I know, it seems like everything I play I win. Now Debbie reminded Eddie that he had to go to work that couple of hours, and Eddie said, I know, I know. And I'm so tired, but we have all this money now. Debbie stayed at the casino and she watched Eddie play, and he continued to win. And now he was making five thousand dollar bets at the baclaw table. And Debbie said, Listen, I've got to go to work. You should quit now. Why don't you just cash in your chips and go to work? And Eddie agreed, and Debbie left for work. But here's the problem. Eddie never made it to work. He just couldn't bring himself to quit. He continued to play throughout the night. He had won more than five hundred thirty seven thousand dollars by four thirty in the morning. Debbie finished her shift and returned home at eight AM, but there was no sign of Eddie. Eddie called her about eight thirty in the morning and explained that he had never gone to work. He never left the casino, but now he had a half a million dollars. Eddie called his work and explained that he was sick and needed the day off, but by then they already knew that Eddie was gambling across the street, and so they fired him. Eddie now didn't have a job, but he didn't really care because now he's rich. Eddie continued to win, and by eleven in the morning he had won more than one million one hundred thirteen thousand six hundred dollars. Eddie would never have to work another day of his life. Remember when I said gambling runs and streaks? Sometimes it seems like you can't lose, and other times it seems like you can't win. Well, it was now one day after Eddie's birthday, and something strange had happened. Eddie was back on the crabs table and he made a five thousand dollar bet on the line and he lost. Now believing that he can't lose, Eddie made another five thousand dollars bet and he lost again. Wait, this can't be right. So he tried it again and again, and within a few hours Eddie had managed to lose all of his chips back to the casino. He called Debbie and asked her to bring back the money that she took home. And of course she said no. And Debbie and Eddie got into a huge fight over the phone. So Debbie took the money back to Eddie, who was still at the casino, and she broke up with him on the casino floor. And within twenty minutes Eddie had lost all of the money that his girlfriend had, and so he called his sister. He asked his sister to bring back the money that she had taken, and they had a big fight over the phone too. She returned to the casino and she gave Eddie his money back, and of course, he quickly lost it. Well, with no money left, Eddie finally left the casino, but he didn't go home. No, he walked down the street to his bank and he withdrew his twelve thousand dollars savings, which took him ten years to accumulate. He returned to the casino, and within a matter of a few minutes, Eddie had lost that too. It was now Friday, 420 p.m. Eddie was broke. After losing almost everything, the casino pit boss comped Eddie a steak and egg dinner. He walked downstairs and he ate his steak. And he thought to himself, this is where it all began. It was just 33 hours ago. Eddie was happy. He had a beautiful girlfriend. He had$12,000 in the bank and he had a really good job. He had won and lost over a million dollars. His girlfriend left him. His sister was mad at him, and of course, he lost his job. Eddie had$35 left over. After eating his steak and eggs, he went out onto the street. He caught a cab and told him to take him to Hoover Dam. He got out, stepped up on the ledge, and he jumped to his death. Now, some people might say that this is just a story and that it never really happened. And I want to say to those non-believers, you want to bet? You know, we do have a website, creepradio.com. Oh, you can hear this episode there, and you can watch other episodes too. Yes, he said watch. Because sometimes we have video along with our episodes. Oh, don't forget to subscribe and share with your friends.
